The Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) is the UK’s national organisation for trail riders and green road users. North Yorkshire TRF is the regional group for riders across the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and surrounding areas.
Green lane riding is the legal use of unsurfaced public roads, often known as BOATs (Byways Open to All Traffic). These historic routes form part of the public highway network and can legally be used by motor vehicles unless specifically restricted.
Yes - when carried out on legally accessible routes. North Yorkshire TRF promotes responsible and lawful riding, route research, rider education and countryside stewardship.
Not at all. We actively welcome beginners and regularly organise beginner-friendly rides designed to help new riders build confidence in a supportive environment.
Almost any road-legal motorcycle can be used for green lane riding, although lighter dual-sport and adventure bikes are generally best suited. Riders use everything from small trail bikes to larger adventure motorcycles.
Absolutely. Our group includes riders of all ages, abilities and bike types. Many members started with little or no off-road experience.
Rides are relaxed, social and supportive. A typical day might include a briefing, several scenic lanes, café stops and plenty of teamwork along the way. Nobody is expected to ride beyond their comfort level.
You’ll need a road-legal, insured motorcycle and suitable riding gear. Off-road boots and protective equipment are strongly recommended, but you do not need expensive specialist kit to get started.
The TRF also works to protect and preserve historic green roads through voluntary maintenance work, responsible riding education and collaboration with councils, landowners and other countryside groups.
Membership is through the national TRF organisation, after which you can connect with the North Yorkshire group and take part in rides, events and community activities. You can find out more about joining the TRF here.
Responsible trail riding on legal routes is a legitimate countryside activity. North Yorkshire TRF promotes respectful riding, seasonal awareness and active conservation work to help maintain the routes we use.
Depending on the event, prospective members may be able to attend selected social events or introductory rides. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.
