Twice a year, volunteers from the North Yorkshire group of the Trail Riders Fellowship carry out essential maintenance on the byway over Deadman's Hill towards Arkleside, helping to protect the lane and keep it open for all users.
Typically, between six and twelve members take part, with a 4x4 used to transport people and tools along the route. Volunteers bring lunch and hot drinks, making the day not only a chance to give something back, but also a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members and enjoy some well-earned banter.
Spending just 2 to 3 hours, the group focuses on clearing aggregate from the steel and concrete drainage grips along the lane. Keeping these drains clear allows water to run off correctly, preventing erosion and reducing the risk of damage that could otherwise lead to costly repairs or lane closures.
This work is fully endorsed by North Yorkshire Council and carried out as part of the Path Keepers initiative, demonstrating the TRF’s commitment to responsible trail riding and long-term access to the countryside.
